I've fiddled with running a 12/6v system on old trucks.

I just took two 6v batteries and put them in series. Ran 12v to the starter and whatever modern accessories I wanted, plus the headlights, dash and turn/stop/running lights. The 6v tap was to run the original radio and gauges. I never had a problem with the batteries, since the current drain for the instrument cluster was quite low.

As for 24/12, I have not tried this. My understanding is that 24v is too much for a 12v starter, unlike 12v for a 6v starter. Ray Suiter @ Helitool says he taps 12v off his 24 set, and he has not had any battery problems.
