using the first three digits of the VIN
Position:
1 - number of driving axles 1 = 2wd, 2 = 4wd
2 - tonnage 1=100, 2=200, 3=300, 4=WM300, 5=500
3 - # of cylinders (engine), 6 or 8
example 228 = 4wd, W200, 8cyl
236 = 4wd, W300, 6cyl
118 = 2wd, D100, 8cyl
Easy to remember when scouting the junkyards.
