Dj,
I am not an expert on winches. Here are some of the basics that I have learned
thanks to others on the forum and a tech at the Braden Winch Company.

The U in the model number means undermount. This means that the center of the winches spool sits
in line with the mounting brackets so that half the spool is above the brackets and half is the spool is below.
This causes the undermount winches to sit much lower than the overmount models.

Braden made undermounts for the PW's. Trying to put an overmount winch on a PW may not work due to the PTO to winch
driveshaft may not line up and may not be long enough. Mounting brackets would need to be modified. Since the overmount
winch sits higher, it would cover more of the radiator grill. The grill may have to be removed to make room for the spool.

The bottom section of the grill is removed to make room for the spool on the undermount models.
The look of an overmount may not be very appealling since it sits so high.

The PW's winchs were rated at 8, 10, 12,000lbs.
The M-3 is rated at 5000lbs.

These differences and others can be seen in a catalog and a Braden Worm Gear Winch Manual. Some ebay seller got over $70 for a
Braden Manual. I got mine for free from Braden.

Depending upon what you are after, with enough time and money, modify any winch set up. How much it will cost, what it
looks like, and how safely it works is always in question.
Hope this helps,
Mark
