Coil gets hot ?

Are you running the original distributor? There is a 'filter' under the coil. it goes bad. I think guys replace it with a block of wood with a screw through it.

Or, If it has been converted to 12v, is the coil hooked up backwards? The two little connectors should be marked + and -. - goes to points, if - ground battery. Backward works, but not well and coil gets HOT. Next time it dies, check for a hot coil?

Or, it could be a bad coil. How does it run under load, like up hill?

Next time it dies, pull the air cleaner, and loook in the carb for a squirt of gas when you hit the gas. And also check for spark.
