Hi Dave,
I have seen lots of nice wooden boats ruined that way. The wood still expands and contracts and the fiberglass does not at the same rate. As they start to seperate, the water finds its way in between the wood and the glass and it rots away leaviny a nice thin layer of fiberglass. However, it does cut down on the maintainance until that point. Saturating the fiberglass with epoxy instead of polyester resin works better but it still adds a lot of weight to the boat and with a wooden boat, there really is no good shortcut to proper maintainance.
