We see a lot of cracked aluminum Dodge rims at work. Nearly all of them are from the Cummins powered trucks. The cracks usually start from the outside edges of the rim on the inside of the wheel. There have also been a few that crack crosswise from the valve stem hole, but that is more common on aluminum Semi wheels, usually on the steering axle/s. The "temporary emergency repair" is to tig weld up the valve stem hole and surrounding cracks, and redrill the stem hole 180 degrees away. It is then for "non-steering axle use only, and only for transport of a disabled vehicle to the nearest replacement source". I put steel wheels on my 2001 CTD because all of the aluminum wheels had started to crack. Locally, we blame it on the condition of the roads ie: LOTS of major potholes.
