All these things are true but here's the deal...they didn't invent these laws to stop Jo Blow from replacing the frame on his Power Wagon he wants to run in the 20th annual Power Wagon parade. They invented these laws to stop sale of stollen Lamborghini Mercielago's & the like. I'd hazzard a guess that if I were pulled over & a police officer asked me about my truck...if I told him I restored it from the ground up & every part is off a different vehicle...he'd care less. In fact...I bet if I told him the original cab was so rusty I transfered the vin tag over...he could care less.
Why do you think Vintage sells new tags?
Do you think when a cop looks over a restored truck with a bright shinny new tag he just thinks the truck was real well looked after?
They don't care.
If you came right out & told them you switched frames or tags...it's their duty to uphold the law but I'd bet 99% of the time they'd pretend they didn't hear you.
We need Ted Piche to weigh in & see if he'd haul a guy in if he knew a vin tag or frame was swapped in the restoration of a vintage car or truck.
Doubt it. I've done it lots & lots of times.
Most guys on here have.
