... the time we had a crew cab Chevy 1.5 ton dually 4x4 (or 6x6, depending on your point of view), and we were driving on a little jeep road after very prolonged rain in Arizona. The driver cut a corner on the track, and went off the little road just a bit, and promptly got stuck - the water table was about 8" under the ground. We had about eight men, two other trucks with winches, wood, come-alongs, jacks, everything a boy could want in the situation, but it still took three and a half hours to dig that truck out and get it back on the track, where the ground was hard enough to support it.

Well, that was good, and we were proud of ourselves for getting that truck out, and so we drove off up the road to turn around and head back. But the driver forgot, and just tried to make a u-turn over everyone's scream of "Noooooo!!!!". The front axle of the truck was off the road, and down she went. Took us another hour and a half of work get get it out again. That driver was unpopular that day, to say the least.

Moral: Four by four, schmore by four - deep mud is an evil foe.
