W200 Brake Drum Removal

I am trying to remove one of the front brake drums from the 1964 W200. The wheel turns freeely, but the drum won't come off. In these sitations I never force things, I just use a bigger hammer. But before I employ the Hammer of Justice to its fullest extent, can someone please confirm for me that these drums in fact press fit into place? It would be a bad thing if I were pounding away if that isn't the right way to do it. Been there, done that, paid for the parts I broke...
