Getting ready to pull the motor (315) and trans (NP420) from the 57 W200, figure I'd unbolt and remove the trans first then lift the motor and bellhousing together. My shop manual states to have the trans in gear before removing, was wondering why? After unbolting from bellhousing will it just slide back to remove? Being that this is the first time I've done this kinda work I'd appreciate any tips. Also whats the preferred method of hoisting the motor, using a liftplate on the carb intake or bolts thru the head and if so which ones.

Thanks.....Kevin in (soggy) Rehoboth
