I get around the dilemma of charging simply by plowing in a lower gear. I have about the same number of years on my batteries and they are Sears Diehard. You're right in that the plow is normally lifted at an idle which equates to lower charging output. The point I was trying to make was that by not raising the plow to it's upper limit you were reducing the wear and tear on the pump/motor as well as the draw on the batteries. With my old "T" handle cable control Western plow, I'm looking for every advantage I can get.
