1980 was about the turning point. Even in 1979 there wasn't much beating the Japanese machinery. Remember Bob Hannah? He didn't lose too many races on that Yamaha!
I heard he crashed it in a race in Carlesbad, broke his thumb & so he duct taped his hand to the throttle & went on to win.
It may be folklore but that's how the story went.
