Regarding my episodic struggle with 318 ignition and incinerating starters, it turns out that if you install the magnetic-pickup ignition conversion kit (as I did), and follow the wiring instructions and you are using a typical aftermarket ignition switch (as I am), the starter remains energized while the engine is running. You have to install an isolated starter button that energizes only the starter. The ignition switch can only energize the system.
