Hourglass= solid (fersure), straight = hydraulic (probably), but have your machinist look them over. Even the solids may have a oil valve in them... or maybe straight solids?

The solid ones are cast as 'dumbells' to save weight. The Hydraulics can't be, because they have moving parts inside. Solids need to be adjusted regularly, hydraulics just once at assembly, then never again. Hydraulics are silent. Solids have the classic tickety-tickety of a well-oiled, precision machine. Solids can't pump up, but hydraulics never do either- except in theory. Hydraulics have been around for 50-60 years...
