I thought the "Bendix" was the kind with the big flat-wire spring and the pinion gear that slides on the shaft by inertia, rather than the kind with the solenoid.

Anyway, I took it apart and sure enough if I clamp the pinion gear in the vise and put as strap wrench on the overrunning clutch housing I can make it turn in the direction it's not supposed to turn. I'm not sure how hard it should be to force it to slip. Now the question is where can I get a new clutch mechanism? It's an Autolite 6 volt starter (12 volt system, but somebody must have converted the alternator and ignition), Autolite part number MCL6107, Chrysler part numbere 1311459. I can't google up either of these numbers on the internet. If I was still in Everett and Frenchy was still in business, I'd take it to him and he'd dig the part out of his back room and give it to me just for the joy of finding a use for some old 6 volt auto electric thing, but he retired and sold his shop to some yuppies who got rid of the old stuff and don't want my business anyway.
