Everything is a used part, after it's been fired once. So, a 'new' part put in yesterday is only a good used part today.

Timeing components do get 'improved' in various years. Things like fuel pump cam, spacers, etc vary. Keys instead of pins, bolts instead of studs. Make sure they match up.

When I was an engine mechanic, I would remove the crank gears the easy way- with an air chisel. Instead of a puller, I would grab the air chisel, and split the gear between teeth at the key way. 30 seconds. Not reusable though.

And on some of the later engines (Gm, Ford big blocks)with retarded cam timing, I could chamfer the hole in the crank gear, so I could put it on backwards. It only worked on the engines with the keyway cut in just the right place re: the teeth on the gear. I would check for "split overlap" with a straight edge across two lifters. Cam is at Zero when the straight edge lies on the two lifter, one heading up, the other down.
