Jason,
When I put a second 230 in my truck, it turned by hand, but I must have not tried turning it all the way, because when I got it in the truck, transmission and all, and turned it with the starter, it jammed. I managed to lever it back to where I could turn it by hand (well, with a screwdriver on the flywheel teeth) again, took off the pan, looked OK, took off the head, then discovered rust on cylinder walls which had grabbed the rings. Ended up taking the whole engine out and apart, but finally had the original engine rebuilt with a sleeve for the #1 cylinder, which had been busted when the connecting rod came loose on the freeway at 2600 rpm.
So look for rust on the cylinder walls. It doesn't take much to jam a piston. Hopefully you can hone it clean.
Tom
