I think that Chris may be on to something here.

Reaching back in my memory (a scary thing), the whole reason behind the ballast resistor is to drop the volts to reduce the abuse on the points/condensor setup. If you are running straight 12V juice into the coil, it would seem that the completed circuit at the points would be hotter than the points were designed for.

I had a F*rd tractor that we converted to 12V that would chew up points and condensors - not erosion of the contact material, but transfer from one contact of the points to the other - and we put a resistor in the line to the coil and fixed the problem.

Have seen elsewhere that a coil designed for CD or Electronic Ignition is too "hot" for points (Mallory's, MSD, etc.) and will eat condensors - but have no experience with this.

Just out of curiosity - are your spark plugs getting eaten up as well?
