Don't be shy about pulling the dist for easy access. Just bump the engine around til the rotor points straight ahead before pulling it, then don't let anything fall into the hole. Re-install with the rotor once again in the straight ahead postion. It's lots easier to fiddle with those little parts on the bench.

Points only last about 10,000 miles. The reason they were replaced with electronis was to keep engines burning clean for longer intervals.
