The pump is up on the firewall, so this fits your theory of the problem. I found no evidence of any compromise in the fuel lines which might allow air to get in.
My plan at this point is to reassemble the mechanical fuel pump, which "sucks" much better, and see if this fixes the problem. The electric pump was always intended as a temporary fix anyway.
I will report progress.
P.S. Does anyone have an opinion on the best type of mechancial fuel pump? I have at this point see a few different varations and sources, and I suspect that all are not created equal.
