I think your toasted 12volt wire to ignition is the place to start. Something there caused resistance and that made heat. On newer chrysler stuff your key turns to a START position and a RUN position after the motor is started. It is possible to have spark in the start position and once motor starts you let up off the key to the run position and it dies.

As for your hard start warm and your comment abut adjusting dwell it sounds like your entire tuning of the motor is screwed up. really advanced timing will give hard turn over starts when the motor is hot. 38 degrees total advance is max on a mopar v8. Stock small blocks usually like 34 range. It can vary up and down the scale some depending on your area and fuel. Dwell should be set first with the feeler gauge and then maybe adjusted a little later using a meter. From there you set the timing and fine tune the carb. After its running fine you adjust the dwell you have hosed the timing and everythng will be off. When this happens the motor wont give its best and could be hard to start warm.
