The oil flows out of the upper galley fitting, and back throught the lower fitting, into the spool valve. With enough pressure, the spool valve opens, allowing filtered oil to dump into the pan. So I dunno which direction of flow is through the filter, inwards or outwards. My 1935-42 Motors Manual don't show the filter, Ill go dig for my 1950's book now.
The 53-40 does have a flat rate book in it though. $1 to re-torque the head. $2 for a Cadilac v8.
