This holds true for may pieces of trail-behind and mounted PTO driven implements.

Without an overrunning clutch (AKA over-running coupler), you may find that the Power-Wagon will not have enough power to pull away from a dead stop while simultaneously powering a mower in tall grass or weeds. If you try to start the mower first and leave the transmission in neutral, the mower has enough flywheel effect to continue to turn a “long” time before slowing enough to allow the transmission to be shifted into gear. Then, the problem still exists. You are quickly moving into tall grass without the benefits of both truck and mower momentum.

The overrunning clutch makes this process a “lot” easier. You can leave the transmission in neutral and engage the PTO and then the trucks clutch. Even in tall vegetation, the engine “should” have enough power to get the mower blades up to full speed. Once the mower is up to speed and rotating freely, you can now disengage the trucks clutch and shift the transmission into gear. You can do this relatively quickly and the mower will not slow noticeably because of its great flywheel effect. Engage the trucks clutch again and at least the mower will still be up to speed as it enters new uncut vegetation.

Addition of an overrunning clutch in the PTO driveline to the implement eliminates a lot of wear and tear on equipment and makes the task a lot safer and more fun.

If the image does not show here, the link below will take you to a page from Hub City on their Over-Running Coupler. Our Power-Wagons use the one at the bottom of the page made for 75 HP tractor models.
