In preparation for installing my front ARB locker, I am going to also rebuild my rear diff with the lock-rite. I scared up a couple of orphan diff cases, removed the old races etc and sandblasted them. (have I mentioned how much i like my sandblast cabinet?) When I was priming them I started noticing differences. They both have the same casting number, except the newer one (from a 65) has -2 after the number. The casting numbers are also in different places. There are other minor differences in the various ribs. The earlier one is a bit more robust. First question is, does anyone know if there are any internal differences?
Second question neither one had any coating on the inside, except for rust. I know the interior of transmissions, transfer cases etc are coated with glyptol. Would diffs also have had that coating? Will red oxide primer work inside a diff, or will it dissolve in the oil?
Thanks,
Tim
