I seem to remember that the ideal working height is two or three inches below your bent elbow. Stand upright with your arms at your side and your hands in front, like you were cleaning a carb (or washing dishes). Measure from the bottom of your elbow to the floor. I cannot remember where I heard that, however it was in association with moden kitchen tops being measured for the average 1940's house wife. As we grow taller as a population that old kitchen height may not be relevant.

I'm 5-11 and my benches are 42". I'd use them if I could get to them. If I was wanting to swing a hammer I might want mine a little lower ~40".

I made a section about 2/3 from the right, lower so my chop saw deck would sit flush with the top of the workbench.
