GM's labor costs, with pensions, medical, etc, are $90 per hour. The "Foreign Guys" who make cars here, pay lots less, being non-union. That leaves lots of $$$$ for better plastic, better engineering, faster improvements.

I've heard that Ford needs 160 mirror designs, Toyota uses 6. So the inports are more efficient in other ways too. More money spent on engineering/design than labor?

I doubt if any of the big three will survive as we know them. Mergers are coming, soon.

I know, I know, if it weren't for unions, we would all still be making ten cents an hour. But do you think assembly line workers should earn more than PhD's?

So if Ford, as a frinstance, goes bankrupt, then restructures without union contracts, they could survive... Caterpillar did it.

Perhaps if D/B took Chrysler private again, then Chrysler files for restructuring...
