I am not sure in your case, but when I replaced the +30 year old coil (being proactive) with an aftermarket universal coil on my carryall, I burned up the points in the distributor. My truck didn't have a ballast resistor in the ignition circuit and as far as I know, never did. This truck had been in the family since 1946.
I used the recommended points and condensor from the PIF file. There maybe a coil with a built in resistor that I didn't know existed.
