I've driven the mainland, Northern Baja and the Southern portion (La Paz, Cabo and up to Todos Santos), but not much in the middle portion of the state.

Perhaps you've considered this already, but I've always thought a neat road trip down there would be to first drive to Guaymus/San Carlos on the Mainland side, then take a ferry across to Mulege'. This would allow you to explore the middle sections of Baja and give you access to the fun in Southern (Cabo San Lucas, Del Cabo and La Paz). Mulege' is should be really special too. San Carlos on the Mainland side is also a nice spot for an overnight rest; safe, clean and nice hotels and a marina. I don't quite know what the charge is to ferry you across the Sea of Cortez, but you would board the ferry it in neighboring Guaymas. It's an estimated 8 hour crossing. You get a "short-cut" and a cruise(?) at the same time!

If you can tailor your trip a bit earlier in the year May/June rather than June/July, you might consider that; July heat & humidity. On the bright-side, it may be considered "off season" in some of the resorts (lower rates). Entering from California, you will probably have to drive a quite a way from the North (past Ensenada certainly) to begin to get the true feel of the pennisula and the smaller towns and such... although the guys from California may know some nice routes.
