Hi oger,
I would be wary of using hickory. Hickory has a tendancy to expand and contract to a far greater degree than other hardwoods. We layed a hickory floor in a house we were working on. We acclimated the flooring for a week prior to laying it. After the floor went down there were NO gaps to be found, it was beautifull. Then they fired up their woodstove in the next room. Within a week you could roll quarters down the gaps. The boards were 3 1/4" wide, and each one shrunk up about an eighth. And yes, I tested it with a moisture meter. In the spring it swells back up perfectly. It is a pretty wood, but since then I think it should be left as axe handles.
