I just remembered what the thing I tried was called. Yes, the chain maintenance seemed like a real hassle. The chains ran pretty much in the open inside the tub and had to be manually oiled frequently. I'm sure the chain compartment would become a greasy dirty mess pretty quickly. Also, the only "cab" one could get was a sort of canvas tent, the tracks tended to throw snow inside, and it could easily dig itself down into the snow and sit on its belly going nowhere. This was undoubtedly because the hull was made for flotation in water. I'm sure it was a good swamp buggy, but as a snow machine it was a bad compromise. They weren't cheap, either ($7000 to $15000 10 years ago).
