we have an 'upstate' classification so that we urban and suburban dwellers can shift blame to 'another' group of people in our state. i like to do things like blame upstaters for electing hillary and chuck schumer. by blaming people up there, i can get through my day without having to find out who around me voted them in. its a mental trick i use to keep me on an even keel. it is also useful as a quick way for ny people to say stuff like - those upstate people dont know what the hell they are talking about. upstate guys say, those city slickers come up here and think who they hell they are. they buy perfectly good flat farming land and want to build a starbucks or mcmansions. its also cool to say, ive got a buddy upstate that makes maple syrup and drives a stable of power wagons! if i had to explain to someone where schroon lake was, give landmarks and distances it would be a drag!
