Hey Vette,
1) Dave's advice is the first thing to try. Normally this will fix you up.
2) To test the starter with a positive ground system, you would connect the positive battery terminal to the starter case, and the negative battery terminal to the starter electrical post.
3) If the above doesn't work, another thing to try is to clean all electrical connections in the starter system (including battery and ground connections). Use wire brush, file, emery paper to remove corrosion and expose fresh copper. Sometimes we are not getting enough power to the starter to kick out the bendix. The starter motor has to spin fast enough to kick out the bendix via centrifugal force.
