I've seen more than a few that were rusted through to the point of being pretty much useless. If they now make them out of something better, presumably they were old ones that were plain steel. This is Western Washington, mind you, where anything left out in a field will be covered with blackberries within 2 years and a small forest within 10, and by the time anybody rediscovers whatever it was, the wooden parts will be compost and the steel parts will well on their way back to iron ore. I've seen entire abandoned houses disappear under the blackberries within a couple years and trees that would make decent saw logs growing through various vehicles. If rust never sleeps, it never even thinks about closing one eye in Western Washington.
