I still use chains and binders. I also cross the chains but the attach point I like to use is up and over the rear differential. If you come from underneath and then over the differential "nose" you stay away from the brake lines. Perhaps that's not enough spread. but it has worked fine for me pulling around the state on our naturally designed frost heaves and cracks.
