I have a a friendly acquaintance who is retired, but used to be a DuPont scientist. One of the things DuPont developed back in the 60's was a really innovative treatment for steel to reduce rust and they thought one of the big 3 would jump on this to improve quality and thus better sales after the public was informed.
THe DuPont team pitched it to one of the big 3, and they basically were told to forget it; the underlying message was that rust-through produces revenue in parts sales.
It was because of that basic mind set that the Japanese were able to be so successful with their emphasis on quality and reliability.
