Did you mean exhaust in the 3rd paragraph? I know they've been using stellite for exhausts for long time. But intakes are cooled by the incoming air and 'lubed' by gas, so is hardening intakes ever neccessary?

Exhaust valves might have an 'S' stamped into the top. Sometimes this means stellite, some times it could mean "Sodium Filled". The sodium filling was to cool the valves- think like copper to transmit heat down the stem. But, sodium could explode if exposed to air, so machinsts exercise caution. Sodium filled valve are used in heavy use, so you could have them in a industril application. The only 's' valves I saw had a kind of lightning bolt shape to the s, like the storm trooper ss symbol. Mine were stellite. I recall seeing some burned stellite valves from my '41. There was a pie-slice shaped hole burned away, but the stellite 'crust' was still around the edge.
