Ok, if you're using a generator, wire this basic system with nothing else on it:

1. The ignition switch should have an "A", "C", and "F" terminal. Wire the coil to the "C" terminal (16 gauge). If the switch has an "I" wire to the "I" terminal

2. From the regulator's "B" terminal, run a wire (10 gauge) to the ammeter's "+" terminal for a 6V system, "-" terminal for 12V system. From the ammeter's "+" or "-" terminal run a wire (16 gauge) to the ign. switch "A" terminal. If the ign, switch has a "B" terminal, use it.

3. From the "+" or "-" ammeter terminal run a wire (10 gauge) to the switch mounted on the starter. This will complete a charging/run circuit.

4. Make sure the gen. "A" terminal wire (10 gauge) goes to the regs. "A" terminal same for "F" terminals (16 gauge)

5. Use NEW wire so we are no dealing with shorts from old fabric covered wire.

Once this is done, let's test the system for correct charging using the ammeter. Check the battery cells if not already done so.

6 Start the engine and run it at a fast idle and determine if it is charging properly and let it run till you feel the battery is charged, then turn off the engine and wait the 10 minutes. If you have a high charge rate 40-50 amps for the duration the engine is runnung, this can indicate a shorted field wire in the generator. The charging rate should reduce over a period of time.

7 Start the engine, jumping the battery if needed and wait till it has charged, then turn the engine off. If the battery was dead and you had to jump it, disconnect the regs "F" wire at the reg. and wait 10 minutes.

8. Reconnect the "F" wire and try starting the engine. If it starts under the batteries own power, and you did not have a constant high charge rate, replace the regulator. Don't mess with trying to clean points or adjustment, the reg. is shorted and causing a ground and battery drain.

10. Post a new post at top of forum and let us know what happens. We will continue trouble shooting the system if needed.
