Yes, the exhaust blows on the bottom of the intake.

V8's can plug up the heat crossover under the carb because of oil leaking through the intake gasket form the lifter valley. 6's don't get the oil there. But it is possible that that engine has not gotten good and hot in years, and may have carboned up. You'll have to pull the manifolds as an assembly, then separate them and check/clean them out. You WILL break some studs into the block, and at least one of the bolts that clamp the manifolds to each other. Or, take it out and get it cookin, up hill with a load.
