It's a dirty trick when they change your zoning and tell you you can't keep doing what you were doing before. It's one thing to tell you you can't do something new like build a shopping center on your farm, but to tell you you have to stop doing what you were doing before should not be allowed. This is like what happens when they start sticking new house subdivisions out in farm country and then the new residents realize that cows and pigs stink so they end up banning farming. I think a lot of it is because local governments are frequently run by the friends of the real estate developers and their goal is to sell new houses for as much money as possible, which translates into "driving out blight", "blight" being people who were already there before it became illegal to work with your hands, look poor, or have animals.
The other lesson in this is that as much as we all hate politics, we have to keep an eye on our government. No doubt the county council passed some law changing your zoning, and no doubt they didn't go to any effort at all to tell all the affected people what they were about to do. They sneak the worst things through when nobody's watching, which is why we have to check up on them now and then, even though it's totally boring and unpleasant.
