Jon my '01 3500 dually has a 6 speed with 3:54 gears and my son's '03 3500 single has 3:73 with an automatic. I got 16 mpg with the '03 running to CT pulling a 60 W300 at 65mph+. I just put a chip in my '01 and have yet to pull a long distance for mileage but it did help on the power band. Pulling my 35' two place with either truck is no problem with my equalizer hitch. As others have stated the addition of the helper springs and a few other small details are the differences. I would go with an equalizer set up if you do go with the 2500 IMO.
