The Dowel Pin issue is a dowel pin that locates the Timing case cover with the block.
This issue is true on both 4B series and 6B series. Its possible for the dowel pin to move forward and drop into the timing gears. A terrible noise results and serious damage. Its also possible for the pin to drop harmless into the oil pan. Cummins has a Dowel Pin retainer kit which features a retainer, new front seal and timing case cover gasket. Also TST Products sell a kit.

Click the link, then after reading the page, click on Dowel Pina.pdf for install instructions and pictures. The risk is sufficient for Cummins to develope the kit. You can also make your own shaped washer/retainer and just buy a new front seal and gasket.
