The easier way to do this is to cut the original cord about a foot from the appliance, assuming the cord at that point is OK, and install a 15-amp male twist-lock plug. Then install a female twist-lock receptacle on the new extension cord. It will not disconnect inadvertently, but can be unplugged for easier storage.

Milwaukee now does this on most of their tools with their own special locking cord. A lot of my electric drills have received this feature over the years. It also prevents them from winding up in somebody else's van "by mistake" at the end of the work day.
