Too much heat?

I had to use a torch to get the companion flange off of the output shaft of a tranny and I'm wondering if the heat damaged it. The splines were rusted on. I turned it on end, soaked it in kroil, tapped it a lot, and put my biggest pulley puller on it and cranked it down with an impact wrench until the screw started to bend, but it wouldn't budge. Since the tranny has to come apart anyway one way or the other, either for parts or to replace some stripped gears, I decided to take a torch to it. I heated the flange as evenly as possible using the cutting tip (didn't have a rosebud handy). It never got red hot, but I think it got close. It burned all the oil and most of the paint off, and started to burn the seal. Eventually it moved a tiny bit and I was able to use the puller to get it off. I did this indoors in rather dim light, so I'm pretty sure it didn't even get to a dull red heat, but assuming it got almost to that point, is it still safe to use? Is the transmission output shaft still good? I was careful to keep the torch off the threads, but it still got plenty warm. I'm letting it cool in air now. Would I have been better off to quench it in water?
