Any engine going into long term storage ie; Winter etc should have a oil/filter change prior to layup. Old Oil will have acids and some possible mositure. The acids are not good sitting in the bearings for long periods, thus the pre layup change. However, I have never seen real lab tests done on this to really prove its effectiveness in long term storage.
