Rusty Frame

As I get ready to head home for a month or so, I need to get a battle plan for fixing some rust on the frame. There are a couple of spots on the frame where the rust has split the two frame pieces about 1/4". Can I just cut it out and weld in a new piece? I know your not supposed to weld on frames too much, but its only on the horizontal piece, not the vertical (where the strenght is). Anyone have some tips for this? The longest segment is about 6 inches.
