I'm not sure about the axle type on the pickup I'm looking at. Would the Dana or the Timken be more common on a '48 model?
Some folks on this Forum would consider your Toyota suggestion as blasphemous, but I'm on my 3rd 4-Runner over a 20 year span and appreciate the breed! The sizing of a shortbed Toy frame should be similar to that of Ken's Scout. In fact, a 22R would probably be good engine for a Willys with no weight issue. And everything you said about cost/availabilty/aftermarket parts is true. But it would still just seem a little weird.
The pickup I'm looking at is in better shape than just a cab and box and I would prefer to just do an engine conversion than to do a body and frame swap.
