Seems like the idea would work with a brass punch, assuming that you didn't hit a double-thick area with bracing, etc. causing a steel on steel hit. (Wouldn't try it myself - or recommend that you do, purely theory here)
OR, you can do it the way I do. Stick a hose in the tank and use a mechanical siphon to get what you think is all of the gas out of it. Drop the tank and then have 4 gallons of gas pour all over you and the rest of the garage while praying that the compressor motor doesn't kick on igniting the whole mess!!! =8^o
