Pat I have a poly 318 in my 64 Townwagon which I had overhauled. I built my own headers and had dual exhaust installed. I then installed a Pertronix ignition conversion after which came a Weiand aluminum manifold with an Edelbrock 1405 carb. I believe the ignition helped as did the headers. The manifold and carb didn't do a thing for my bottom end torque since the manifold is a single plane. I did get some torque back by placing a 1" riser under the carb. If you do go with the manifold swap I would suggest a stock 4 barrel manifold which show up on ebay now and again. The truck will cruise all day at 60+ with the 4:10 gears but with my old stock two barrel I could chirp the tires into 3 gear but now it won't. As for mileage I really can't say but I have gotten up to 12 mpg at 65 mph on a trip. Nothing against the Edelbrock but I'm thinking of going to a spreadbore to see how it performs. A poly is a great engine as you know from your 20 years owning one and I think rebuilding the heads was one of the best moves I made along with a rebuild.
