A grinder is not a good idea unless there is weld over the number, a wire wheel should be enough.
Can you see anything of a number at all? Sometimes I have to search for a while before I find the edge of one number, and then I know which way to go to find the rest.
Are there holes in the front or rear door jamb where a tag might have been?
Just knowing the pattern of holes might help narrow down the era, which migth help figure out where you should be looking for a number.
How about a winch? The winch has a date code, or the rim date codes? Anything to get you closer to what year the truck was.
