Most important part of determining whether you will have trouble with law enforcement is not the GVWR of the trailer but the GCVWR of the tow vehicle. Most 3/4 ton pick ups will be in the neighborhood of 19k to 22k. 1/2 tons go about 12.5k. So, when towing you need to know what the trailer weighs, the load, and the weight of your truck loaded. The combined weight is what counts. Then of course you need to figure axle weights to make sure you are not over on any axle as law enforcement will most likely check you on a portable scale wich weighs each axle.
